The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) released new data today that indicates local mask ordinances are helping to slow the spread of COVID-19. “This new data shows us what we already knew, wearing face masks works,” said Dr. Linda Bell, S.C. State Epidemiologist. “We’re strongly supportive of these local leaders’ initiatives that are centered on protecting the health and wellbeing of their communities.”

Reports that the “administration has reached a deal with Moderna Inc. to manufacture and deliver 100 million doses of the company’s [COVID-19] vaccine once it is approved, according to a news release from the U.S. Health and Human Services Department.” Under the “contract, worth up to $1.525 billion for 100 million doses, the doses would be owned by the U.S. government and would be distributed and used as part of its [COVID-19] vaccine campaign.” CNN adds, “If the doses are used, they would be provided to Americans at no cost.”

BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina, South Carolina Hospital Association (SCHA) and South Carolina Medical Association (SCMA) are joining together in an effort to persuade the public to limit potential exposure to COVID-19 even as coronavirus cases are on the rise in South Carolina, hospital beds are filling and deaths are currently numbering in the high hundreds.

The American Medical Association (AMA) today announced the election of Gerald E. Harmon, M.D., a family medicine physician from Pawleys Island, S.C., as the new president-elect of the nation’s premier physician organization. Following a year-long term as president-elect, Dr. Harmon will assume the office of AMA president in June 2021.
